• New sidewalks, improved accessibility planned for Lexington Avenue in Asheville (wlos.com) — Downtown Asheville's Lexington Avenue between Woodfin and Walnut streets will undergo a six-month sidewalk overhaul starting winter 2027, replacing damaged brick, updating streetlights, and meeting ADA accessibility standards. City officials say the bond-funded project will improve safety and access, while working with the Asheville Downtown Improvement District on signage and outreach to help affected businesses stay visible during construction.
• Trash-eating bear cub spent days with its head stuck in a jug, NC rescuers say (charlotteobserver.com) — A bear cub in Asheville's Haw Creek neighborhood was rescued after spending days with its head stuck in a plastic jug, prompting fresh warnings about unsecured trash. Wildlife officials say overflowing dumpsters and household cans are drawing more bears into Asheville neighborhoods and urge residents to use bear-resistant containers or secure lids and bins to prevent similar incidents.
• Duke Energy agreement with North Carolina utilities department aims to protect customers from data center costs (myfox8.com) — Duke Energy has reached a new agreement with state utility officials that would require large data centers and other big power users to pay upfront for grid connections and upgrades, shielding regular customers in areas including Asheville from those costs. If regulators approve it by mid-November, the policy will govern future high-load projects and help protect local household and business electric bills.
