CHARLOTTE, NC β€” Wednesday, Charlotte became a rocking city, all thanks to a new initiative celebrating the Queen City’s public spaces. The City of Charlotte has installed 100 rocking chairs throughout the city as part of it’s Placemaking Program.

β€œWe chose rocking chairs as a symbol of the city’s charm, encouraging people to stop and take in the environment, and celebrate their public spaces,” said Monica Holmes, placemaking manager for the city’s Urban Design Center. β€œWe want to build on the city’s welcoming reputation while encouraging Charlotteans to explore the possibilities of shaping our community together.”

The campaign mirrors seating strategy at Charlotte Douglas International Airport, which has been wildly popular with air travelers.

The city said it hopes that residents will sit and relax in the new chairs, and maybe even share ideas about how to transform underutilized public spaces into vibrant, useful places for everyone. Each chair will have the program’s website painted on it, with the hope that lounging will lead to visits to the online portal for neighborhoods and businesses to find funding opportunities, emerging artists and tools to implement public space projects.

The chairs will remain in place through the end of the year, the city said.
