12 North Carolina Companies Make Fortune 500 List For 2017
The annual Fortune 500 list ranking the biggest companies in America is out, and 12 North Carolina firms made the list.

Fortune Magazine is out with its coveted Fortune 500 list for 2017 and of the companies on the list, which represent two-thirds of the United States GDP with $12 trillion in revenues, 12 of them have headquarters based in North Carolina.
Companies are ranked by total revenues and topping the list nationally is Walmart, followed by Berkshire Hathaway and Apple. Walmart is also the biggest employer on the list with 2.3 million employees while Apple is the most profitable company on the list.
While 15 companies dropped off the list, there were 20 newcomers on the list, including Elon Musk’s electric car company Tesla. Other than clearing the bar of at least $5.1 billion in annual revenue, Fortune explains how newcomers make it on the list.

The 2017 list also includes 32 female CEOs, which Fortune says it the highest number of female CEOs to ever make the list.

- No. 121 Duke Energy
- No. 169 Nucor
- No. 223 Reynolds American
- No. 230 VF
- No. 245 BB&T Corp.
- No. 287 Sonic Automotive
- No. 290 Laboratory Corp. of America
- No. 390 Quintiles IMS Holdings
- No. 397 Sealed Air
- No. 432 Hanesbrands
