UNCC Shooting: 2 Dead, 4 Injured On Charlotte Campus

CHARLOTTE, NC — The gunman accused of killing two people and wounding four others inside a classroom on the University of North Carolina Charlotte campus was tackled and taken into custody by campus police trained for an active shooter, authorities said Tuesday night.

Three of the injured gunshot victims are in critical condition, according to officials.

The suspect, who was armed with a pistol, began to fire inside the campus building around 4:40 p.m., Chief Jeff Baker, head of UNCC police and public safety, said at a press conference Tuesday night.

“Run, Hide, Fight. Secure yourself immediately,” the school's emergency notification service said in a tweet sent out to students.

Baker said the officers trained for the incident and one officer went to the suspect immediately to take him down.

“We responded immediately and we were able to take the suspect into custody,” Baker said. “Our officers’ actions definitely saved lives. There’s no doubt about that.”

Authorities would not confirm the shooters identity or the exact weapons used in the shooting, pending a CMPD investigation. He was not someone on the radar of campus police, Baker said.

Earlier in the evening, it was reported that the gunman is a student of the north Charlotte university.

“I can’t tell you the sadness of the entire community to know a situation like this has occurred on our campus,” Baker said.

Following the incident, police advised families seeking to reunite with students to meet in the Harris Teeter parking lot located at 8600 University City Boulevard.

A Waka Flocka Flame concert was scheduled to begin on campus at 6 p.m. at the Jerry Richardson Stadium. That event, as well as a Charlotte 49ers baseball game scheduled for the evening were canceled.

Here is UNCC's protocol during a lockdown:

• RUN: If you are outside or in a building and feel that it is safe to flee, run and find protective cover.
• HIDE: If you are in a building and unsure of where the threat is, find the closest room in which to hide. Close and lock the doors or barricade them if they do not lock. Close all the window blinds and hide away from the windows and door. DO NOT answer the door. Remain hidden until notified it is safe to move by University officials.
• FIGHT: This is a last-resort option! Do not seek the assailant. However, if you come into direct contact with the individual, use any means available to you to defend yourself.
