After 5-Hour Standoff, SWAT Apprehends Suicidal Man With Gun

The dramatic overnight standoff with CMPD SWAT led to the temporary shut down of traffic along a section of Beatties Ford Road.

CHARLOTTE, NC — A man described as suicidal was taken into custody for mental evaluation overnight after he barricaded himself inside a north Charlotte home with a gun in what turned into a five-hour standoff with police, according to reports.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police responded to the home on Dundeen Street near Beatties Ford Road around 7 p.m. Wednesday evening, and found the man hold up inside and making threats to hurt himself, the Charlotte Observer reported.

The man fired a shot inside the home around 10:45 p.m., at which point officers from CMPD SWAT responded to the scene and police shut down traffic along Beatties Ford Road at Dundeen Street, the newspaper said.

The standoff ended shortly after midnight when the man came out of the home. He was taken into custody for mental evaluation under an involuntary commitment order and also charged with possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
