International House's Art Exhibition, The Journey, at Queen City Art - opening reception Sept. 12 (charlotteonthecheap.com) — Charlotte residents can explore "The Journey," an immigrant and refugee art exhibition now showing at Queen City Art on Raleigh Street throughout September, with free evening hours several days a week. Two special free events on September 12 and 19 will feature artists, student work, and new research on immigrant integration led by UNC Charlotte and other local partners.

Neighbors describe terrifying moments during northeast Charlotte police shooting (wsoctv.com) — Neighbors in northeast Charlotte are still shaken after police say a man exchanged gunfire with CMPD officers Tuesday, sending him to the hospital and leaving homes riddled with bullets. Residents describe diving for cover as rounds pierced walls and a bedroom, while the suspect—who has a prior robbery conviction in Charlotte—now faces multiple attempted murder charges.
   

3. Charlotte middle school reports case of whooping cough: What we know (wbtv.com) — A student at Carmel Middle School in Charlotte has been diagnosed with whooping cough, and Mecklenburg County Public Health is contact tracing and notifying potentially exposed families. With 140,000 Charlotte-Mecklenburg students back in classrooms, doctors stress checking your child's vaccinations, watching for a persistent, severe cough, and calling a healthcare provider quickly if symptoms appear.
   

4. CMS celebrates historic academic gains on heels of turbulent summer for district leadership (wccbcharlotte.com) — Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools just reported that district test scores have finally surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with record gains in every tested subject and big jumps in third-grade reading and math. District leaders are celebrating the progress, but the school board stresses that closing achievement gaps for minority students remains the top priority as Superintendent Crystal Hill returns after a recent investigation.
   

5. Will Graham to lead 9/11 Prayer Breakfast at the Billy Graham Library (billygraham.org) — Charlotte faith and civic leaders will gather at the Billy Graham Library on September 11 for an invitation-only 9/11 Prayer Breakfast marking 25 years since the attacks. Led by Will Graham and local police and fire chiefs, the program will focus on remembrance, first responders, and prayer, with a recording available afterward for the wider community.
