Today's riddle: Why are elevator jokes so good ? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Sheriff: Safety, crowding will plague uptown jail despite Jail North reopening. (charlotteobserver.com) — Mecklenburg County residents should know that Sheriff Garry McFadden warns overcrowding and safety issues will persist at the uptown jail even after $3.2 million is spent to reopen Jail North. He says staffing shortages, rising inmate numbers, and policies linked to Iryna's Law mean hundreds could still sleep on temporary bunks, and he expects to seek further taxpayer support soon.
2. Campbell's layoffs hit Charlotte Lance cracker workers amid $500M in cost cuts (charlotteobserver.com) — Campbell's cost-cutting plan has led to salaried layoffs that include workers at its Charlotte snack facilities, where Lance crackers are made. While the company describes the local reductions as small, it has previously closed a Ballantyne office and an Emerald nuts plant, even as it invests in upgrades at remaining Charlotte operations.
3. David & Nicole Tepper Foundation commits $3.4M to expand vision care in Carolinas (wsoctv.com) — Charlotte families should know that a new $3.4 million commitment from the David & Nicole Tepper Foundation is expanding free school-based vision care that already serves Charlotte-Mecklenburg students. The Vision To Learn program now covers four Carolinas regions, providing screenings, exams, and glasses during the school day, with support from the Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC and assemblies planned later this month.
4. Man shot, killed in south Charlotte shooting (wbtv.com) — Overnight in south Charlotte, a man was fatally shot at an apartment complex on Mereview Court near Quail Hollow, and police are investigating the case as a homicide. Charlotte-Mecklenburg officers have not released the victim's name or identified a suspect, and they're asking anyone with information to contact 911 or Crime Stoppers.
