Today's riddle: What do you call a paper airplane that can't fly? 🤔 (Answer below!)
1. Ayrsley Movie on the Lawn: Hocus Pocus Oct. 30 (charlotteonthecheap.com) — Families in Charlotte can enjoy a free outdoor screening of Disney's "Hocus Pocus" at the Ayrsley Event Lawn on Friday, October 30, from 7:30 to 9 p.m. Bring your own chairs or blankets, then grab dinner or treats from nearby Ayrsley restaurants to make a full Halloween-season evening close to home.
2. Casual dining chain abruptly shutters its only Charlotte restaurant. What to know (charlotteobserver.com) — Bob Evans has permanently closed its only Charlotte restaurant on Statesville Road near Northlake Mall, leaving local fans without a nearby option for the chain's country-style meals. Customers noticed the sudden shutdown as the location disappeared from the company's website, with the closest remaining restaurant now in Huntersville.
3. South Charlotte neighbors fight to save 100-year-old live oak trees from removal (wbtv.com) — South Charlotte neighbors are bracing for the loss of two 100-year-old live oaks near Freedom Park, which will be removed to build a nearly 6,500-square-foot home. Residents argue the city's heritage tree rules—requiring a permit, a $1,500 fee, and a replacement sapling—don't adequately protect Charlotte's shrinking tree canopy or neighborhood character.
4. New program brings mental health, medical care to unhoused people in Charlotte (wbtv.com) — A new Wellness Without Walls partnership is bringing mental health and medical care directly to unhoused people across Charlotte, meeting them in encampments, shelters, and shopping centers instead of clinics. Atrium Health teams, working with Roof Above and Hearts for the Invisible, have already enrolled about 130 people, with more than 20 moving into housing and a mobile clinic van on the way.
5. County Commissioners will wait for results of CMS investigations (wccbcharlotte.com) — Mecklenburg County leaders in Charlotte are holding off on their own probe into Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools finances while state and federal investigators dig into possible mismanagement of hundreds of millions in education funds. With CMS already under scrutiny over spending on its former superintendent and potential conflicts of interest, county officials say they'll rely on outside audit findings expected to be discussed later this month.
