Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department Animal Care and Control said it is "way over capacity and needs people to adopt dogs as soon as possible. Officials said adoptions will avoid having to put the animals down. CMPD Animal Care and Control have at least 40 dogs needing kennels and some kennels are already being shared by two or three dogs at once, officials said. CMPD is waiving adoption fees to promote finding these animals new homes," WCNC reported. (WCNC.com)
  2. Cody Shane Ware will not participate in the next NASCAR race because "his broken right foot can't handle the demands of a road course race. Ware suffered an impact fracture and torn ligaments in a crash at Texas Motor Speedway on Sept. 25 but was able to race Sunday at Talladega Superspeedway with a boot on his foot. The Cup Series races Sunday on the Roval at Charlotte Motor Speedway is a hybrid road course and oval that requires more shifting and braking than an oval," ESPN reported. (ESPN)
  3. If you're interested in learning how to help people during an emergency, this opportunity could be for you! "Goodwill Industries of the Southern Piedmont is holding a free class this month for anyone interested in learning how to help people in certain emergencies. Goodwill is offering a course for CPR, First Aid and AED certification on Saturday, Oct. 22. The course is intended to help people provide life-saving help until first responders can provide more care, and promises to help those who take it learn about topics ranging from basic first aid to recognizing cardiac emergencies," WCNC reported. (WCNC.com)
  4. A shooting happened Tuesday morning in a shopping center in Charlotte’s Steele Creek area and police rushed to the scene. "Medic confirmed one person was seriously injured and taken to Atrium CMC Main following the shooting on Berewick Town Center Drive, which is off Steele Creek Road, in southwest Charlotte," WECT reported. (WECT)
  5. A homicide in North Charlotte is under investigation by CMPD. "It happened just before 11:30 Monday night on Statesville Avenue near Tipton Drive. Two people were taken to the hospital with gunshot wounds, and one died at the hospital," WCCB Charlotte reports. (WCCB Charlotte)
