Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. American Airlines Education Foundation awarded $84,000 in scholarships to 32 students from the Charlotte area. Now they will receive extra funds for college this year. According to WCNC, "of the 32 students from the Charlotte area, four are first-generation [college] students. Each student gets $2,500 to use for their tuition as long as they are enrolled in full-time, undergraduate studies at accredited colleges and vocational programs. First-generation college students also get an additional $1,000." (WCNC.com)
  2. The city of Charlotte is proclaiming "Never Give Up Day" because the world needs hope in these troubled times! According to EIN News, "Never Give Up Day is a global celebration focused on cultivating a mindset of determination to overcome difficult challenges. The city of Charlotte joins community members celebrating Never Give Up Day on August 18 and calls upon its citizens to make this day a springboard for awareness-raising actions." (EIN News)
  3. Jane Wu, a UNC Charlotte alum, is clearing a path for diverse developers. Wu has a reputation for being a "hard hat in high heels" and she's following in her dad's footsteps. He is a real estate developer. According to Spectrum News, "She's now the CEO and founder of the commercial real estate developer Panorama Holdings LLC." ... Wu believes is "putting her money where her mouth is, donating $50,000 to start an annual scholarship for students at UNC Charlotte's Belk College of Business." (Spectrum News)
  4. Michael Staub, a resident of Charlotte, recently won a $3 million lottery on a $30 scratch-off ticket he bought in Mint Hill. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, "Staub bought his winning Fabulous Fortune ticket from Perry's Market on Wilgrove Mint Hill Road. ... The man took home a lump sum of $1,278,189 after state and federal taxes were withheld." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
  5. According to WCNC, "Tens of thousands of people serving punishments for felony convictions in North Carolina but who aren't behind bars can now register to vote and cast ballots following an appeals court ruling. ... The change proceeds from litigation challenging a 1973 law that prevents someone convicted of a felony from having voting rights restored while they are still on probation, parole or post-release supervision."
