CHARLOTTE, NC — One week after a 22-year-old man was found shot to death in the common area of a north Charlotte apartment complex near the University of North Carolina-Charlotte campus, police have arrested and charged a man with his murder.

On Nov. 20 around 8:30 p.m., officers responded to an emergency call regarding an assault with a deadly weapon in the 8900 block of Avebury Drive , where they found victim Kendric Washington. Officers performed CPR on Washington, but he was pronounced dead at the scene, according to a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department statement.

Homicide detectives identified George Ivan Hayes, 25, as the primary suspect and arrested him with a warrant without incident Monday morning. Hayes was charged with murder and transferred to the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office.
