🌱 ArtPop Helps Local Artist Get His Dream Job + Baby Formula Scams

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hi all! I'm back in your inbox this morning with everything you need to know about what's happening locally.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and very hot. High: 98 Low: 73.

Here are the top seven stories in Charlotte today:

  1. A Tuesday afternoon house fire in southeast Charlotte on Country Walk Drive hurt one person. When the Charlotte Fire Department arrived, the home was heavily engulfed in flames. Firefighters controlled the fire in about 40 minutes. The homeowner, who suffered minor injuries, was treated at the scene. (WCNC.com)
  2. David Bulfin, a Charlotte-based artist who used to create in secret, recently got his dream job with a little help from ArtPop. It is a nonprofit that recognizes artists' work in the Queen City through public displays and signage. "It wasn't until ArtPop that I was able to come out of my shell and allow the work to be seen, and it's been an extraordinary journey," Bulfin said. According to WCNC, ArtPop works to "promote artists in Charlotte and has helped hundreds earn hundreds of thousands of dollars along the way. You've probably seen their billboards along Interstate 77, Interstate 85 and other highways in the Charlotte metro." (WCNC.com)
  3. COVID-19 vaccines for babies, toddlers and preschoolers have now been approved by federal health agencies. According to WFAE, "two vaccines, from Pfizer and Moderna, have been granted emergency use authorization for children ages 6 months to 5 years." Here's are some places in Charlotte that offer COVID vaccines for children under 5: AH Teen Health Connection, Charlotte Community Health Clinic West, Campus Medical, Carefirst Specialty Pharmacy. 4. Charlotte Today grill master, Ernie Adler, helped feed refugees near the Ukrainian border. Adler was a volunteer with the Chefs for Ukraine program with WCK. He worked as a WCK volunteer at a facility located in Przemsyl, Poland which is on the border with Ukraine. Adler said that during his time there, the cooking and volunteer team would prepare hot and cold foods then travel to different distribution points on the border to greet refugees coming by train from Lviv, Kiev and further east near the main fighting with Russia. Every day, the team would make about 5,000 salami and cheese, or vegetarian panini which are easy to hand out. They'd also make a hot meat dish, rice or kasha, vegetable, potato, salad, soup and dessert. (WCNC.com)
  5. A 10-year-old boy died from drowning in east Charlotte. Officers were called to Rupert Lane in the evening. The drowning victim was taken to the hospital where died from his injuries. (WBTV)
  6. The baby formula shortage has gotten worse and now parents need to beware of scams. Tom Bartholomy from the Better Business Bureau wants to help protect parents from a devious scam. "Scammers are exploiting a nationwide baby formula shortage, tricking consumers into paying hefty prices through fraudulent online stores," he said. Parents and caregivers who are desperate to feed their babies are tricked by fake websites or social media profiles with images and logos of familiar formula brands. This makes the consumers think they're purchasing from a company's official website but the formula never arrives. (WCNC.com)
  7. The city of Charlotte's Arts and Culture Advisory Board on Tuesday awarded $2.01 million to the Arts & Science Council (ASC) for fiscal year 2023. According to the government, the board is using this award to "fulfill a commitment by the city and its partners to the whole of the local arts community to meet needs by funding new and existing opportunities. The $2.01 million includes $950,000 to support ASC operations and nearly $1.06 million for the ASC to give grants to arts and culture organizations and individual artists. (charlottenc.gov)
