🌱 ATM Shooter Photos + Low Turnout Expected For Municipal Election

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hello again, friends! It's me, Nicole Fallon-Peek, your temporary host of the Charlotte Daily. Let's get this weekend started off right, with a quick dive into the most important things happening these days in town.

First, today's weather:

Mostly sunny and hot. High: 98 Low: 75.

Here are the top three stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Charlotte police have released photos of a suspect tied to a fatal Jul. 13 shooting at a local ATM. Karen Baker, 48 of Waynesville, was killed after being shot at a 7-Eleven ATM on University City Boulevard. One of the two suspects was captured on surveillance footage and was shown to be wearing a mask and all-black clothing. A 2011-2012 Black Dodge Charger with factory rims was also reportedly seen leaving the crime scene. If you have information, please call 704-432-TIPS (8477) to speak to a homicide detective or call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600. (WLOS)
  2. The upcoming municipal election in Charlotte is expected to have an "abysmal turnout," according to political scientists, who say they expect less than 10 percent of registered voters to cast their ballots on Tuesday. Experts believe a low turnout is likely because of the growing number of unaffiliated voters in Charlotte. The election was originally scheduled for Fall 2021 but was rescheduled for Jul. 26, 2022, because of delayed census data. Michael Bitzer, professor at Catawba College, urged voters to pay attention to local politics, as "these are the offices that affect the citizens on a day-to-day basis with their policy decisions," he said. 3. The Comedy Zone resumed its scheduled shows last night after a Jul. 16 shooting canceled three performances in the last week. Omar James McCombs, 36, was arrested after the incident after he allegedly fired a gun into the empty club. Comedians Craig Robinson and Eddie Ifft had canceled their shows because of the shooting.
