Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. Andy Hernandez, age 17, was shot and killed in west Charlotte on June 4. A 15-year-old was arrested for the murder and school resource officers at Harding University High School arrested 18-year-old Brenice Gibson, charging both suspects with murder. (WBTV)
  2. Soheil Akhavan Rezaie, a 37-year-old Charlotte man, admitted in federal court Tuesday to stealing mail from residential mailboxes and using stolen information to commit wire fraud. According to court documents, Rezaie targeted mailboxes in neighborhoods in Charlotte and surrounding areas beginning in 2021 through March 2022. (WBTW)
  3. According to WRAL, the Biden Administration considers the North Carolina COVID response a "best practice." This statement comes after the Federal Office of Science and Technology Policy sent a team to see how our response played out. The researchers wanted to discover how small life sciences companies reoriented their efforts to fight the pandemic. (kiss951.com)
  4. According to a CBS News report, a television station in Charlotte said it removed an ad from the National Republican Senatorial Committee for a "false statement on material issue." The ad came in to question from the Beasley campaign and TV station, WSOC, for one of the claims made about a 2019 case while Beasley served as Chief Justice on the N.C. Supreme Court. However, the contents of the ad are said to be accurate. (North State Journal)
  5. There's fraud scheme to which some North Carolinians have fallen victim. Fraudsters use stolen credit card numbers to make large purchases over the telephone. More than 100 businesses have been targeted this year — including tire stores, furniture stores, lumber companies and appliance stores. Oftentimes, drivers were hired through online job sites and paid using third party cash applications so they were completely unaware that the items were purchased illegally. (Go Blue Ridge)
