2 Bodies Found In Union County, Including Swept Away 1-Year-Old

The body of 1-year-old Kaiden Lee-Welch was found in Union County on Monday morning. A man was found dead at a separate location.

UNION COUNTY, NC — The body of a missing 1-year-old was reportedly found Monday morning in flood waters in Union County and a second person was also found dead in the county due to Florence. The Union County Sheriff's Office announced Monday the body of Kaiden Lee-Welch had been found. The news comes after search and rescue teams spent several hours overnight searching for the missing toddler, who was swept away in rushing waters from Richardson Creek on state Route 218.

"Searchers have recovered the body of one year old Kaiden Lee-Welch," the office said in a Facebook post. "Our thoughts and prayers for the little boy’s family and all the search team members and law enforcement officers who helped in this matter. Very sad situation."

Kaiden's mother had driven around the barricades on N.C. 218 and continued traveling east until her vehicle encountered rushing water flowing across the road, the sheriff's office said on Facebook. Her vehicle left the road and came to rest in a group of trees. She freed herself and Kaiden, who was in a car seat. But she lost her grip on him in the flood waters, authorities said.
