Building Evacuated By Hazmat Team After Dozens Fall Ill: Report

Smells from a construction project are being blamed for the incident n southwest Charlotte that made 46 people sick.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Tar smells from a roof construction project that wafting into a HVAC system of an office building in southwest Charlotte made 46 people sick Thursday, according to reports.

The midday incident occurred at a building in a business park in on Regency Executive Park Drive off Nations Ford Road in Charlotte, WSOC reported.

Ambulances and two mass casualty trucks filled the parking lot of the facility in order to evaluate the nearly 50 patients who said they were suffering headaches and nausea. Five of the 46 people evaluated were transported to the hospital, the station said.

Fire officials told WSOC that tests determined there were no hazardous chemicals in the building and they deemed it safe to resume normal operation.
