Burglary Suspect Tried To Kick In Neighbors’ Doors: CMPD

A 17-year-old burglary suspect has been arrested and charged in five home burglaries in his neighborhood, Charlotte police said.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Charlotte police have arrested a 17-year-old burglary suspect, charging him with five burglary cases in his northwest Charlotte neighborhood. He was apprehended June 23 by officers after he was seen casing additional homes in the neighborhood, according to the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department.

Home security camera footage led police to identify Antonio Jackson, 17, as the suspect wanted in the string of burglary attempts. He was arrested June 23 and charged with one count of first degree burglary, four counts of attempted first degree burglary, and felony breaking and entering.

CMPD received a spate of home burglary reports from a neighborhood off Rozzelles Ferry Road starting on June 18, when a woman told police that after taking out the trash shortly before midnight, she found a burglar in her home in the 2600 block of Filson Court. She hid in her home until the suspect left and told police nothing was taken.

Two days later, a woman heard someone attempting to kick in her door around 2 a.m. at her home in the 10100 block of Garman Hill Drive. The suspect, however, was unable to get in. Shortly after that attempt on June 20 — just three minutes later, according to police — a woman in the 2200 block of Winding River Drive heard someone trying to kick in her door. Once again, the suspect was unsuccessful.

The next night — June 21 and shortly before 2 a.m. — the Filson Court burglary victim heard a suspect try to kick in her door, just one day after she had filed a police report on the earlier attempt. Less than one hour later, a victim in the 2200 block of Winding River Drive reported a break-in that sounded an alarm.

After identifying Jackson as the primary suspect wanted for all the cases, CMPD detectives set up an operation to arrest him. While they were conducting the operation, however, Jackson was seen leaving his home on foot and casing homes in the neighborhood.

Around the same time, police received a 911 call reporting a breaking and entering in the neighborhood.

"Officers and detectives then observed Jackson running back to his residence,” CMPD said in an incident report. Officers moved in to arrest him, but he ran away and hid. He was later located by a K-9 officer and taken into custody.

CMPD asks that anyone with information about these cases contact Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
