Cam Newton Takes To Twitter To Apologize For Sexist Comment

Hours after losing an endorsement deal, the Carolina Panthers quarterback said in a video his words to a female reporter were unacceptable.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- Hours after Cam Newton lost an endorsement deal for making sexist comments to a female sports reporter, the Carolina Panthers quarterback took to social media to issue an apology.

Dannon Yogurt cut ties with Newton as their pitchman Thursday after he made sexist comments about a sports reporter during a player media availability event in Charlotte the day before. When asked by a female journalist for comment on a player’s running routes, he responded with a dramatic smile that appeared to mock the reporter before answering, saying, “It’s funny to hear a female talk about routes.”

The comment ignited an immediate firestorm for one of the Panthers’ most popular players.

“I understand that my word choice was extremely degrading and disrespectful to women,” Newton said in an apology posted to his Twitter account Thursday evening. “To be honest, that was not my intention,” he said.

“What I did was extremely unacceptable. I’m a father to two beautiful daughters and at their age I try to instill in them that they can do and be anything that they want to be,” he said.

“The fact that during this whole process I’ve already lost sponsors and countless fans, I realize that the joke is really on me,” Newton said.
