First, today's weather:

A t-storm around in the p.m.. High: 91 Low: 70.

Here are the top six stories in Charlotte today:

  1. La Voz de Mi Gente or "the voice of my people," is a campaign that has enlisted community advocacy groups, businesses and churches to reach voters wherever they may be. According to WFAE, "North Carolina's Latino community leaders gathered outside of Compare Foods supermarket in south Charlotte to begin a statewide appeal to Latino voters. ... Lariza Garzón with the Hispanic Federation said the goal is to cast a wide net and appeal to voters through organizations they know and trust." (WFAE)
  2. Charlotte-Mecklenburg School students and staff will return to school on August 29. CMS teachers are starting this school year despite staffing and salary challenges. According to WCNC, "teachers will be greeted by a 4.2% average pay raise, passed last week by the CMS Board of Education. Still, Cheek and others said it's not enough to keep and retain teachers. CMS starts the school year with hundreds of vacancies across all job types, from teachers to bus drivers." (WCNC.com)
  3. According to WBTV, "this weekend, there is a big family reunion happening in Charlotte, one of love and unity. On Saturday at Tuckaseegee Park, Team TruBlue will host its annual event featuring food, music, games and a softball tournament. The goal is to bring Charlotte's neighborhoods - including Little Rock and Boulevard Homes - together. For Adams, it's also personal. His son was murdered in 2008 at the age of 15. The event has been held yearly since 2014 in his memory. Kids and violence are words that have been repeated too many times across the Charlotte area." (WBTV)
  4. One person died and another was injured after a crash on Interstate 85 in west Charlotte. According to WBTV, "that crash happened just after 3 a.m. Friday on I-85 South between Freedom Drive and Billy Graham Parkway. Troopers with the North Carolina State Highway Patrol said it appears the driver lost control and rolled an SUV. Two of the four lanes of I-85 South are closed as of 4:30 a.m. while troopers investigate." (WBTV)
  5. According to the New York Post, "Clark, a bald eagle from the World Bird Sanctuary, caught the attention of TSA security and passengers at Charlotte Douglas International Airport. "TSA officers are used to seeing an eagle on their uniform as they look over their shoulder, but I'm sure the team at @CLTAirport Checkpoint A did a double take when they saw a real one earlier this week," the account said in a post, accompanied by a photo of the majestic animal. ...TSA agents were notified that Clark would fly, and they were able to search Clark and his handler before boarding." (New York Post)
  6. There's a new West Charlotte High School that cost $106 million and has 100 classrooms inside. According to Axios Charlotte, "West Charlotte will kick off the school year in a brand new building for the first time in nearly 70 years. The first day of school is this Monday, Aug. 29. Why it matters: DubC, as the school is affectionately known, is a Charlotte institution. As a historically Black high school, it was a beacon during segregation, and it later became a model of successful integration when students were bussed in from other parts of town. Today, the school's student body is primarily Black." (Axios Charlotte)
