Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- Flight cuts by American Airlines will affect Charlotte Douglas International Airport as they will go into effect later this year. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, this is "part of an overall national strategy. While no routes are being completely removed, AA is cutting back on the number of daily departures at Charlotte Airport, a company release stated. Beginning in September, AA will cut back 3 percent of its schedule, equating to 17 daily departures. ... AA customers who have had their flights altered will be contacted directly with options for a standard schedule change or a full refund." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
- Alex Contreras, a Charlotte man, won a $200,000 lottery after buying a $5 scratch-off in Mooresville. Officials said Contreras bought his winning Bonus Bucks ticket from the Han-Dee Hugo's on Brawley School Road. He traveled to lottery headquarters in Raleigh Monday and took home $142,021 after state and federal tax withholdings, according to Fox 46 Charlotte.(Fox 46 Charlotte)
- NASCAR Cup Series driver Aric Almirola teamed up with food product brand Gwaltney and the Roc Solid Foundation to give a young girl who is fighting pediatric cancer a new playground set. According to WCNC, volunteers were sent "to the Charlotte family home of Adriana, a 4-year-old child that suffers from pediatric cancer. In Adrianna's backyard, the volunteers constructed a playset to surprise her with when she got home. The playset build is part of Gwaltney's Building On Hope campaign where the company has donated $50,000 to the Roc Solid Foundation's mission to help kids battling pediatric cancer." (WCNC.com)
- A few weeks ago, The World Health Organization officially declared monkeypox a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The CDC's latest data shows there are 16,836 worldwide, the vast majority of them are in countries that have not historically reported monkeypox. The North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported 27 cases as of Friday and Mecklenburg County reported 12 cases, according to Fox 46 Charlotte. Mecklenburg County health officials said that "the issue they're currently facing isn't testing those who may be positive, it's treating those at risk." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
- Several eye doctors have discovered that there is a link between increased screen usage during the pandemic and complaints of dry eyes, eye strain and headaches from their patients. According to WBTV, "Dr. Spencer Moore, an optometrist who works in uptown Charlotte, said compared to before the pandemic, complaints about these issues have easily doubled. ... Dr. Moore said the best things you can do are to look into ways to block blue light from your screens, like wearing protective glasses or changing screen settings, get your eyes checked, and if you have a prescription, make sure it's still the best level for you." (WBTV)
