🌱 Carolina Bikers Honor Heroes + Son Thwarts Home Invasion

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Morning, everybody! I'm back in your inbox this warm summer morning to walk you through everything you need to know about what's happening these days in town.


First, today's weather:

Partly sunny. High: 90 Low: 68.


Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:

  1. According to WCNC, The Mecklenburg County Juvenile Detention Center will "close later this year, effective at the end of a three-year agreement with the North Carolina Department of Public Safety on December 1." This decision was made the staffing at the Detention Center Central were found inadequate to operate that facility. (WCNC.com)
  2. According to WCNC, "The Supreme Court ruled to overturn Roe v. Wade Friday, the longtime legal precedent guaranteeing the right of legal abortion in the U.S. The landmark ruling now puts abortion into individual states' hands." This causes people to wonder what's next. North Carolina nor South Carolina do not have "trigger" laws regarding abortion. At least "a dozen states have trigger laws that will immediately take effect and ban abortion following the Supreme Court's ruling on Roe v. Wade." Gov. Roy Cooper said he will "fight to keep politicians out of the doctor's exam room."   3. According to WCCB Charlotte, "a bill that's been given the green light from both of North Carolina's Senators is headed to the house for review." Senator Thom Tillis agrees the focus this bill has on improving access to mental health and law enforcement training. Local gun law reform advocates say this is a positive step. (WCCB Charlotte)
  4. A man tried to break into a home in the the Sheffield Park neighborhood of east Charlotte on Tuesday morning. This happened after the homeowner left home. During her absence, the Nest camera in the backyard showed a shirtless man wandering around her property. The homeowner called the police and her son who arrived first and hit the man with a shovel, knocking him out until the police and paramedics arrived. (CBS17.com)
  5. According to WCCB Charlotte, "The Carolina Brotherhood is biking more than 600 miles to honor fallen firefighters, police officers and K-9s in North and South Carolina." They started their journey on June 20 in Mooresville then traveled to Concord, "where they were greeted by the wife and mother of fallen Officer Jason Shuping" who was killed in 2020.
