CHARLOTTE, NC -- One week before training camp is set to begin, the Carolina Panthers have fired one of its top leaders.

Carolina Panthers owner Jerry Richardson announced Monday that David Gettleman, who has served as general manager for the NFL team for the past four years, had been fired. The announcement comes on the heels of a 6-10 season in 2016 and making it to the NFL Championship in 2015.

“After much thought and long evaluation of our football operations, I have decided to relieve Dave Gettleman of his duties as general manager,” he said in a statement. “I want to thank Dave for the role he played in our success over the past four seasons. While the timing of this decision is not ideal, a change is needed.”
