Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- Thomas Pharr of Charlotte recently won a $150,000 Powerball prize! Now, he and his wife are planning to use the money to renovate their home. "Pharr, 67, bought his lucky $3 Power Play ticket for the Sept. 17 drawing. He matched numbers on four white balls and the Powerball to win $50,000. The prize tripled to $150,000 when the 3X Power Play multiplier hit," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- The Charlotte Parent’s School Fair is happening Saturday in Camp North End. "Casey Wilson, co-host and event planner for the Charlotte Parent School Fair and Walter Hall, director of Magnet Programs in CMS stopped by Rising to share more details. This event has been held annually since 2016 and it is the only event in the area where parents can learn about school choice all in one place! The first 100 guests will receive a complimentary goody bag," WCCB Charlotte reports. (WCCB Charlotte)
- A major crash investigation is underway for a fatal pedestrian crash in the Central Division. The crash happened on Oct. 9. "Officers in the Central Division responded to the 200 block of S Cedar Street in reference to a pedestrian versus vehicle crash. Upon arrival, officers located a 2013 Van Hool Commuter Coach bus with a pedestrian pinned underneath the vehicle. CFD responded and extracted the pedestrian and who was then transported by Medic to Atrium Main with serious injuries," according to City of Charlotte Government. (charlottenc.gov)
- Baker Mayfield, quarterback for the Carolina Panthers, has his left foot in a walking boot. "Mayfield suffered a high ankle sprain and will be out “at least a couple of weeks.”... With Sam Darnold still on injured reserve and at least a couple of weeks away from returning from his own ankle injury, PJ Walker would be in line to start if Mayfield doesn’t play Sunday against the defending Super Bowl champion Los Angeles Rams," WBTV reports. (WBTV)
- "The Carolina Panthers have parted ways with Coach Matt Rhule after the team fell to 1-4 following their home loss to San Francisco. The Panthers home game Sunday basically looked like a home game for the 49ers with the amount of red shirts in the stadium. Rhule leaves behind an 11-27 record, according to the Panthers. The 47-year-old will be replaced on an interim basis by defensive pass game coordinator/secondary coach Steve Wilks, per team officials," WCCB Charlotte reports. (WCCB Charlotte)
