Charges For Speeding Driver After Fatal Accident

A driver making a U-turn on Freedom Drive was killed last night. Here's what Charlotte police have to say about who was at fault.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A 44-year-old woman was arrested and charged Monday night after the car she was driving smashed into a vehicle making a U-turn on Freedom Drive, killing the driver.

The Oct. 30 accident unfolded around 9:30 p.m. in the 2700 block of Freedom Drive, according to Charlotte police, who responded and found the tangled wreckage. According to Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police, Jason Edward Black, 30, was making a U-turn on Freedom Drive near Alleghany Street, when the white Chevrolet Silverado driven by Kianna Yanee Cockfield struck the passenger side of his 2008 Suzuki SX4, sending it careening into outbound lanes..

Cockfield was traveling at a high rate of speed, according to CMPD. After hitting Black’s vehicle, her vehicle drove off the right side of the road, where she hit a utility pole, causing it to split and power lines to fall.

Black was taken by paramedics to Carolina’s Medical Center, where we was later pronounced dead, CMPD said. Neither Cockfield, nor her passenger Rajahn Baskerville were injured in the crash, police said.

CMPD has charged Cockfield with involuntary manslaughter, careless and reckless driving and speeding. Police say the case remains under investigation, and ask that anyone with information call Crime Stoppers at 704-334-1600.
