Winter Storm: CMS Makes Decision For Charlotte Schools Wednesday

Tuesday night, a cold front is expected to bring snow and potentially treacherous driving conditions for Wednesday's morning commute.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- The weather forecast calling for snow overnight means classes will be closed at all Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools Wednesday, according to school officials.

“CMS has been monitoring forecasted weather and road conditions to determine the best course of action for students and staff. Based on anticipated weather conditions, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed on Wednesday, Jan. 17,” CMS said in a statement Tuesday evening.

The closure also means that all evening events on Wednesday, Jan. 17 are canceled, as well as all athletic activities, and Community Use of School events, CMS said.

The winter weather is expected to produce up to 2-inches of snow along Interstate 77 and will likely snarl Wednesday morning commutes, forecasters said.

"Temperatures will fall off quickly as the front passes," and precipitation will likely begin as rain, later changing to light snow, NWS said. "Although the amount of snow will be light, generally on the order of 1-2 inches over the mountains and the I-77 corridor, and an inch or less elsewhere, the cold temperatures may allow the snow to stick to untreated roads, resulting in numerous travel problems on untreated roads early Wednesday, including the morning rush hour."

The snow should end by midday Wednesday, according to NWS.
