Charlotte Area Schools Will Be Closed Monday Due To Hurricane

All schools in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg School district will now be closed Monday due to expected impacts from Hurricane Florence.

CHARLOTTE, NC — All Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools will be closed for students and staff Monday, Sept. 17 for Hurricane Florence, the school district announced preemptively Friday afternoon.

The closure announcement marks the third day students will miss class due to the hurricane that pushed ashore in ernest Friday morning with near 100 mph winds.

“Our community remains in a declared official state of emergency by state and local leaders,” Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools announced Friday. “Experts advise that the full impact of Hurricane Florence in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg region will be most severe on Sunday, September 16 into Monday, September 17 and may include severe flooding, widespread power outages, downed trees, road closures and limited access to school buildings and facilities.”

Schools throughout the CMS district were shuttered Thursday and Friday after some facilities were turned into Red Cross shelters. Those shelters now open will remain open as needed, CMS said Friday.

Here’s a list of activities that will be affected by the CMS closures:

  • All CMS athletic practices, games and events are cancelled through Monday, September 17.
  • Extracurricular activities and field trips scheduled through September 17 are cancelled.
  • Community use of schools events and before school and after school enrichment programs (ASEP) are also cancelled through Monday.
