Here are the top four stories today in Charlotte:
- According to CoStar Group, "Centene, a provider of managed healthcare services, axed its plan to develop a $1 billion office complex in Charlotte, North Carolina, dealing a blow to efforts to lure workers back to the office. Centene announced its Charlotte plans with fanfare in 2020, promising to build a 1 million-square-foot East Coast headquarters, where it would station 3,200 workers. On Friday, the company said it has dropped those plans and will let its North Carolina workforce work from home."(CoStar Group)
- According to WCCB Charlotte, "officials say North Carolina's seasonally adjusted July 2022 unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, remaining unchanged from June's revised rate. The national rate decreased 0.1 of a percentage point to 3.5 percent, according to a news release. Officials say the state's unemployment rate decreased 1.5 percentage points from a year ago, and the number of people employed increased 14,216 over the month to 4,943,277 and increased 213,715 over the year." - A Charlotte man was a "serial bank robber" was sentenced to over five years in prison for robbing four banks. According to WBTV, he "targeted branches in Gaston and Union counties was sentenced to more than five years in prison." According to U.S. Attorney Dena King, 62-year-old David Plyler was "sentenced to 63 months in prison and three years of supervised release." (WBTV)
- According to WCNC, "Charlotte does Pride a bit differently compared to the rest of the country. For starters, most cities celebrate in June, during Pride Month, while Charlotte's festival is in August. But what other differences does Charlotte have when it comes to pride events?"
