Here are the top five stories in Charlotte today:
- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police recently arrested two people for the murder of Kalen Hagins, who was one of two people shot June 24 on West Trade Street. According to WBTV, "Hagins was pronounced dead and the other person taken to an area hospital with serious injuries. The arrests in his murder took place July 11 and 13. A juvenile was charged with murder and two days later, Zachary Monroe was also charged." (WBTV)
- The cold case about a murder of a six-year-old resident of Charlotte, has been solved! It took 23 years to break this case and resulted in the mother of the child being charged. According to WCCB Charlotte, "a 6-year-old found dead in 1999 has been identified and his mother charged with murder thanks to a new tip called in to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. On Wednesday, the District Attorney's Office in Dekalb County, Georgia announced the identification of William DaShawn Hamilton, a 6-year-old found dead in a Georgia cemetery in 1999, who spent the last two decades without a name. Police say his mother, 45-year-old Teresa Ann Bailey Black, has been charged with two counts of felony murder, two counts of cruelty to children, aggravated assault and concealing the death in this case." - The city of Charlotte plans to spend $1.5 million on workforce training programs through the Workforce Partner Support Grants program. According to Spectrum News, "the funds will help increase access to training programs in financial and professional services, technology, manufacturing, transportation and health care industries." Applications will be accepted July 15 through July 29. (Spectrum News)
- The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics gathered data that shows how groceries continue to cost more than they did just a year ago. WCNC reported on this matter, saying, "that's why it is increasingly important to find ways to save money when getting the food your family needs. - Earlier this week, CNBC reported that North Carolina is "America's No. 1 state for business, thanks to its booming economy and track record of innovation." According to WCNC, "the Tar Heel State has always been a contender in CNBC's annual competitiveness rankings, typically ranking in the top 10 since the rankings' inception in 2007. This year is the first time North Carolina topped the chart, with CNBC praising the state's legislators for being able to put aside political differences to boost the economy." (WCNC.com)
