Charlotte Emergency Management Hurricane Florence Update

Government & Emergency Management in the Queen City provide an update on preparations for the Charlotte area prior to Hurricane Florence.

Charlotte & Mecklenburg County officials detailed preparations ahead of Hurricane Florence making landfall for the Queen City. Officials from Charlotte Fire Department, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Emergency Management, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department & MEDIC (Mecklenburg County EMS Agency) held a press conference Wednesday Afternoon at Charlotte Fire Department Station #10.

Chief Reginald Johnson of the Charlotte Fire Department stressed the dangers of flood waters and standing water. "We need to start using the term Turn Around Don't Drown" said Johnson. "If you see any type of standing water or moving water, don't drive into it. If you don't drive into that water, we won't have to come and rescue you."

Officials also stressed the importance of checking on your neighbors and having the necessary supplies on hand for up to 72 Hours.

  • Hand Powered Radio
  • Important Documentation
  • Medications
  • Fully Charged Power Banks (For Charging Cell Phones)
  • Cash (REMEMBER: ATM'S may not be operational if the power goes out)
  • Flashlights
  • Extra Batteries
