Charlotte Man Dies At Mecklenburg Detention Center: Sheriff
"We are devastated by the loss," the Mecklenburg sheriff said of an inmate who died two days after being detained.
CHARLOTTE, NC β An inmate died at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center Sunday morning, according to authorities. Officials said the man had been booked at the jail Friday.
Michael Daniel Mangan, 51, was found unresponsive in his cell at 5:38 a.m. Sunday, according to a statement the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office provided to WSOC.
Staff at the detention center and first responders performed CPR on Mangan at the facility in the 800 block of East Fourth Street, but he was pronounced deceased at 6:23 a.m., the sheriff's office reported.

"We are devastated by the loss of Mr. Mangan," Sheriff Garry McFadden said in a statement. "Anyone who enters our facility is a part of our detention community."
After he arrived, Mangan had been put in a pod where inmates are kept for five days before they are reassigned, officials said, noting he was not in the general population.

Officials said when he arrived at the detention center Friday, Mangan did not display any symptoms of the coronavirus. It was not immediately clear why the Mecklenburg County Sheriff's Office included this information in its report.
The sheriff's office did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Patch on the charges that resulted in Mangan's detention or the connection between his death and the coronavirus.
Five staff members at the Mecklenburg County Detention Center have tested positive for the virus, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services reported this week.
Mecklenburg leads North Carolina's jurisdictions in its number of coronavirus cases, with state health officials reporting 15,024 confirmed cases and 159 deaths as of Sunday in Mecklenburg County alone.
Authorities say the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation is handling the probe into Mangan's death.
