- "Charlotte City Council is set to approve a $106 million settlement this week between Charlotte Water and real estate developers stemming from legal cases about improper development fees. The settlement is part of two class action lawsuits that involve multiple cities in North Carolina, including Charlotte. Developers and home builders claimed that development fees by Charlotte Water for new connections were improperly charged for years and should be paid back. ... Charlotte Water charges fees between $3,500 and over $1 million to developers and home builders to help with the cost of their initial investments," WFAE reports. (WFAE)
- "The former Carolinas Museum of Aviation is moving into a new, bigger space — and a new name is coming along with it. Its namesake is Captain Chesley "Sully" Sullenberger, who became famous for landing a plane safely on the Hudson River in 2009. Sullenberger's quick thinking as the aircraft encountered a bird strike made him a hero, and the incident was dubbed "the Miracle on the Hudson." The Sullenberger Aviation Museum is due to reopen in late 2023, with a groundbreaking ceremony scheduled for September 27. The plane he piloted, US Airways Flight 1549, was en route from New York City to Charlotte, North Carolina — where the museum is located. Many of its passengers live in and around Charlotte, and the aircraft is the museum's best-known exhibit," WABC-TV reports. (WABC-TV)
- "Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools is holding an operations career fair on Jan. 25 at Barnette Elementary School. The school district said the fair will showcase available positions in transportation, school nutrition services, warehouse services and maintenance and custodial services. Full and part-time positions will be available for non-instructional staff. Those interested in applying will need to complete an employment application on-site. Operations representatives will also be available to answer any questions," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
- "A juvenile was killed and a homicide investigation is underway in east Charlotte. ... Officers responded to calls regarding the incident Sunday morning in a residential area by 7400 Williams Reynolds Drive in east Charlotte. Major Jackie Briley briefed the media and confirmed a male juvenile had been pronounced dead on the scene. The circumstances surrounding the death remain unknown...," WGHP FOX8 Greensboro reports. - "Why are major companies laying off thousands of their employees? Let's connect the dots. So far this month, we've seen at least 48,000 job cuts announced by companies like Microsoft, Amazon, Meta and others. Those cuts come as employment in the US remains strong with over 200,000 jobs added in December. Tech leaders say signs of a slowing economy and rapid hiring during the pandemic are to blame for the layoffs," WCNC reports. (WCNC.com)
