🌱 Charlotte's Only Independent Cinema Set to Open + Free Smoke Alarms

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Good morning, Charlotte! It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Charlotte Daily. Let's get this Monday started off right, with a quick guide to the most important things going on these days in town...

First, today's weather:

Pleasant with clouds and sun. High: 85 Low: 65.

Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Mindful Market CLT, a sustainability-centered home essentials and art shop that sells bulk products, artisan soaps and hand-crafted artwork is located on West Boulevard. It started as a labor of love in 2019 and flourished into a South End storefront owned by Tatyana Reisini and Maddy Ebbert. Reisini started Good Earth Essentials, a low-waste pop-up shop in 2019. Eventually, she decided to pursue it full-time and opened up shop in Uptown Charlotte. Two years later, Reisini decided to open her own storefront. So she partnered with Ebbert to form Mindful Market CLT. (WCNC.com)
  2. Doctors are discovering more health issues that emerged along with the pandemic, such as heart disease, which the CDC says is the leading cause of death in women in the United States. Dr. Donald M. Lloyd-Jones, American Heart Association president, said that people were "delaying or avoiding care for chronic conditions, things like diabetes and hypertension and obesity. And those are the very things that put us not only at risk for COVID but also at risk for cardiovascular diseases and stroke." (WCNC.com)
  3. The film industry in North Carolina is rebounding as Charlotte's only independent cinema is set to open. According to WFAE, "the industry saw a historic year in 2021 with an all-time high of $416 million spent on movie and television productions filmed in the state. When the state's generous tax credit program expired in 2014, film production here declined drastically." But the good news is that recent changes to the state's film grant program are allowing the industry to flourish again. (WFAE)
  4. Saturday night, families and friends across the Charlotte area mourned the loss of loved ones to gun violence. Two separate shootings killed three people. As a result, one vigil was held in East Charlotte and the another in Monroe. According to WCNC, in East Charlotte, football teammates joined the family of 15-year-old John Daniel Morales, a Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools student. Two teens are charged with murdering him. (WCNC.com)
  5. Charlotte Firefighters installed free smoke alarms throughout the community on June 4. According to WCCB Charlotte, the fire department "hopes the installations throughout the city will promote awareness and understanding of the importance of having a working fire alarm within the household." (WCCB Charlotte)
