Christmas 2019: What's Open, Closed In Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, NC — Christmas Day falls on Wednesday this year and is considered a federal holiday, which means government offices, schools and many businesses will take a break for observance.

City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County government offices will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24 through Thursday, Dec. 26, as well as Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020.

U.S. Post Office: Closed, Wednesday, Dec. 25 and Wednesday, Jan. 1, 2020

State Offices: Closed Tuesday, Dec. 24 through Thursday, Dec. 26

Schools and Administrative Offices: Closed

Library: All Charlotte Mecklenburg libraries will be closed Tuesday, Dec. 24 through Dec. 26th.

County Health Department: closed Tuesday, Dec. 24 through Thursday, Dec. 26, 2019 and Wednesday, Jan.1, 2020

CATS:

  • On Tuesday, CATS buses, trains and the CityLYNX Connector will operate on a Saturday schedule. On Wednesday, CATS buses, trains and the CityLYNX Connector will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • On Dec. 31, CATS buses, trains and the CityLYNX Connector will operate according to the regular weekday schedule.
  • On Jan. 1, 2020, CATS buses, trains and the CityLYNX Connector will operate on a Sunday schedule.
  • CATS Customer Service will be closed Dec. 24-25 and Jan. 1.

Solid Waste Services

  • Solid Waste Services will not provide collection services on Wednesday. Solid Waste Services will operate on a one-day delay beginning Thursday, with Friday customers receiving collection services on Saturday.
  • The week of Dec. 22 is an orange recycling week.
  • Large cardboard boxes that do not fit in a recycling cart should be broken down into small pieces and placed next to the cart for collection.
  • Christmas tree collection will begin on Monday, Dec. 30. Artificial trees should be scheduled for bulky collection by calling 311 or visiting curbit.charlottenc.gov. Please make sure all decorations are removed from the tree.

  • Food Lion — Christmas Eve: closes at 7 p.m., Christmas Day: closed
  • Harris Teeter — Christmas Eve: closes at 7 p.m., Christmas Day: closed
  • Aldi — Christmas Eve: 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Christmas Day: closed
  • Lowes Foods — Christmas Eve: closes at 6 p.m., Christmas Day: closed
  • Publix — Christmas Eve: closes at 7 p.m., Christmas Day: closed
