- Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said that a "deadly shooting at an apartment complex near the Cotswold community in July is now being classified as a justified homicide." Johnny Green, 23, was found inside an apartment suffering from multiple gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead on the scene. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police said following the investigation, detectives and the Mecklenburg County District Attorney's Office both agreed that Green was killed in a justified homicide." (CBS17.com)
- On Monday, Charlotte City Council voted on making McCrorey Heights a local historic district. According to Spectrum News, "The designation makes it difficult to build or remodel homes that don't meet design standards. Before starting any project involving changes to exterior of a building or property, residents submit proposals to the Charlotte Historic District Commission...Johnson C. Smith University President HL McCrorey established the neighborhood in 1912. According to community historian Dr. Tom Hanchett, from the 1950s to the 1970s, administrators from Black institutions and civil rights leaders lived in McCrorey Heights, including Dr. Reginald Hawkins." (Spectrum News)
- Coffee Roaster Pure Intentions Coffee announced a new retail partnership with Walmart. They plan to distribute four product SKUs across 37 North and South Carolina and 31 Georgia locations. - Big Blue Swim School is one of the fastest-growing franchises in the $3 billion learn-to-swim industry in the USA. The nationally expanding brand provides swim lessons for families with children ages three months to 12 years old...The North Carolina locations are part of Southeast Swim's plans to open 36 Big Blue Swim Schools across the southeast." (SwimSwam)
- Residents and visitors in at least eight North Carolina towns are allowed to sip adult beverages while walking in areas designated for outdoor entertainment. Charlotte may be next! According to Qcity metro's report on a recent city council meeting, "the public will get to weigh in on a plan that could lead to the creation of several "social districts" in the Queen City. Charlotte proposes to have multiple districts (imagine areas such as Uptown, South End, Noda, Plaza Midwood and Camp North End)." (Qcity metro)
- School is in session for South Carolina students in the Charlotte area and North Carolina students will return to the classroom later this month. But with teacher shortages affecting the nation, WCNC wanted to look into finding out if retired teachers could "fill the void while still getting their retiree benefits." Read this article by WCNC for more information that answers this question, "Can retired teachers in North Carolina and South Carolina return to teaching while still collecting their retirement benefits?" (WCNC.com)
- According to the North Carolina Health News, "Samaritan House in Charlotte offers respite care for the homeless. Michael Robinson needed somewhere to recuperate after spending 21 days at Atrium Health Mercy hospital in Charlotte battling kidney failure. The 66-year-old did not have a home in the area at the time, so he sought refuge at Samaritan House, a Charlotte facility where people without stable housing can recover after a hospitalization...Charlotte's Samaritan House is the oldest "medical respite" center in North Carolina.
