Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department arrested Javiere Green who is known as a "serial criminal." Police charged Green with 14 counts of breaking and entering a motor vehicle, six counts of felony larceny and three counts of possession of a stolen firearm. Green is accused of stealing items from the vehicles of 14 different victims. (WBTV)
  2. The Juneteenth Festival of the Carolinas is getting ready to host its 25th annual celebration. Juneteenth, which is now a U.S. federal holiday, marks the day the last enslaved people in the South were told they were free. It's an event that is meant to celebrate freedom and encourage togetherness. (WCNC.com)
  3. A stolen vehicle crashed in northeast Charlotte over the weekend, killing one person. Officers were called to the single-vehicle crash on Bearwood Avenue in the early morning hours on Saturday. The driver sustained injuries in the collision and was pronounced dead on the scene as a result. The victim was 35-year-old Kemarseau McSwain. (WBTV)
  4. A fatal car crash killed one person and injured nine others on Sunday. When officers responded to a late night call at the intersection of Freedom Drive and Toddville Road, they found two vehicles at the scene. The driver of one vehicle, 31-year-old Ricky Dinkins, was pronounced dead. The driver of the other vehicle, 41-year-old Michael Jordan II, was transported to Atrium Main with several non-life-threatening injuries. (WCCB Charlotte)
  5. According to the Charlotte Post, a "Republican measure supporters say would empower North Carolina parents to better monitor their children's public school education — and also would bar K-3 class curriculum from addressing LGBTQ issues — was approved last week by a state Senate committee." The bill deals with controversial issues concerning the use of pronouns for children and their medical treatment without parental consent. Some people say that the GOP is "wrongly interfering in the classroom". (Charlotte Post)
