Here are some tips CMPD suggests that can help prevent holiday crime:

  • Don’t post travel plans on social media, which can alert thieves to an empty house.
  • Make a plan to stop mail or newspapers so they don’t pile up on your doorstep.
  • Close blinds so potential burglars won’t see valuables inside your home.
  • Install an alarm and arm it at night and when you’re not at home.
  • Close your garage doors
  • Store ladders in your garage so thieves can’t use them to access upper levels of your home.
  • Use smart plugs or times to turn lights on or off while you’re away.
  • Don’t hide a key outside your home.
  • Break up cardboard boxes so as to not advertise big purchases or gifts, like TVs.
  • Lock all windows and doors.
  • If you see suspicious activity, call 911.
