Controlled Burn At McDowell Nature Preserve Set For Today

Don't be alarmed if you see smoke near Lake Wylie today. Fire officials will be conducting a controlled burn at McDowell Nature Preserve.

CHARLOTTE, NC — Fire officials are conducting a prescribed burn today at McDowell Nature Preserve, which will cause smoke to be seen in the area, according to Mecklenburg County Natural Resources.

Fire officials say the prescribed burn will start around 1 p.m. March 13, and last for about two to three hours. Smoke is expected to affect air quality in downwind areas.

Natural resource officials use controlled burns as a method to mimic natural disturbances that can help facilitate tree planting or reduce an invasive species. You can learn more about controlled burns here.
