Coronavirus Toll In North Carolina: 3,426 Cases, 53 Deaths

NORTH CAROLINA — The toll of the novel coronavirus in North Carolina continues to mount, as 3,426 cases have been confirmed — more than 200 known yesterday, state health officials said Wednesday morning.

The new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, is now blamed for at least 53 deaths, the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services said in the April 8 update. COVID-19 is now documented in 90 out of 100 counties throughout the state and has resulted in 386 hospitalizations.

North Carolina's COVID-19 hotspot, Mecklenburg County, reported 830 cases as of Wednesday morning and seven deaths. Wake County reported 363 cases and Durham County 236 cases.

The cases tracked by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services include those that have been confirmed in a laboratory, and leave out a larger group of people, such as those with minimal or mild symptoms who were not tested, those who had symptoms but didn't seek medical care, those who sought medical care but were not tested and those with COVID-19 in whom the virus was not detected by testing.

As of Wednesday morning, the age group with the most coronavirus cases is 25 to 49 year olds with 41 percent of all cases, followed by 50 to 64 year olds with 29 percent of the cases and those 65 and older make up 21 percent of patients.
