Coronavirus Update: 108 Dead In NC; More Than 5,000 Cases
New numbers show nearly two dozen coronavirus deaths were reported since Monday, along with more than 100 new hospitalizations.
NORTH CAROLINA — There are now at least 5,024 confirmed novel coronavirus cases in North Carolina, an increase of 208 cases since Monday, state public health officials reported Tuesday morning. The coronavirus-related death toll rose sharply by 22 since Monday, bring the statewide tally to 108, according to the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services.
The new numbers also mean there are now confirmed cases of the new coronavirus, which causes COVID-19, in 93 out of North Carolina's 100 counties.
After a dip in the number of hospitalizations reported over the weekend, North Carolina experienced a spike in the number of patients in need of hospital care, NC DHHS data showed. While the number of people hospitalized with COVID-19 dropped from 362 on Saturday to 313 on Monday. By Tuesday, however, there was an increase of 105 hospitalizations for a total of 418, the largest number yet.

Mecklenburg County continues to be the hardest hit in North Carolina, with a total of 975 cases and 15 deaths, according to county officials, followed by Wake County, which has seen 501 cases.
Data released Tuesday shows in increase in the number of cases reported in congregate living facilities. There are currently 30 ongoing outbreaks in nursing homes in North Carolina, nine outbreaks in residential care facilities, and six correctional facilities.

North Carolina has received a shipment of personal protective equipment for healthcare workers requested from the Strategic National Stockpile, however it fell short of providing all the gear the state asked for, according to data.
Here's a rundown of what North Carolina requested and received from the Strategic National Stockpile, according to NC DHHS:
- Procedure masks: requested 500,000; received 598,000
- N95 masks: requested 500,000; received 443,700
- Gowns: requested 500,000; received 87,966
- Gloves: requested 500,000; received 460,000
- Face shields: requested 500,000; received: 113,184
- Coveralls: requested 500,000; received 414
