Here are the top six stories today in Charlotte:
- Mecklenburg County EMS recently added new heart monitors in all of its ambulances. According to WCNC, this "allows paramedics to make every second count in a life-or-death situation. Paramedics will now turn on the state-of-the-art machines for practically every call they go on, either to monitor a patient's blood pressure and pulse or an EKG during a cardiac episode. Medic officials said this will allow first responders to be faster when it matters most." There's a new cardiac monitor fixed to every ambulance now that operates more efficiently than the former. (WCNC.com)
- On June 12, officers responded to the apartment complex on Dunlavin Way located in east Charlotte, for an assault with a deadly weapon call. The victim suffered from multiple gunshot wounds during the incident. (WCCB Charlotte)
- Mecklenburg County is activating cooling stations through Wednesday as temperatures rise dangerously high in the Charlotte area. According to Fox 46 Charlotte, the county "will provide refuge for residents from the forecasted heat at Roof Above Day Services, any Charlotte-Mecklenburg Library location, Mecklenburg County Park and Recreation Centers, Senior Centers, spray grounds and select pool locations." (Fox 46 Charlotte)
- According to Fox 46 Charlotte, this city is known for its rich racing history on oval tracks and a lot of drag racers got their start back in the day. Shuffletown Dragway drew thousands of spectators in the 60s, 70s and 80s before the brakes were placed on racing as Queen City expanded. Nowadays, when people stop by Shuffletown Park in north Charlotte, they'll find an oddly paved walking trail that leads to a piece of motorsports history — the former Shuffletown Dragway. (Fox 46 Charlotte)
- The school year is ending for many North Carolina students and during this time, experts want to stress the importance of safe driving this summer because it's the time of year when teens are more at risk of being in fatal crashes. "We're in the early stages of what's unfortunately, become known as 'The 100 deadliest days for teens," Davis Reich with National Road Safety Foundation said. This time between Memorial Day and Labor Day is when a significant number of teen drivers experience fatal accidents. (Fox 46 Charlotte)
- The heat index could feel hotter than 100 degrees on multiple days this week, with temperatures soaring into the high 90s. Rising temperatures cause people to turn on the air conditioner inside their home. But this can impact your wallet in the worse way. Read this article to learn how to keep air-conditioning costs low as temperatures climb high. (WBTV)
