Tips coming in to Charlotte's Crime Stoppers phone line have led to 146 arrests and thousands in reward payouts to the community, says CMPD.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- In the Queen City region, community efforts to fight crime is paying off, literally, according to Charlotte law enforcement officials.

Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police’s Crime Stopper tip phone line pays for tips that lead to arrests. So far this year, payouts have totaled $36,000. Funding for Crime Stoppers anonymous rewards comes through community fundraising, the largest being an annual golf tournament in Ballantyne.

If you’re wondering how often the phone rings, the answer is a lot. Crime Stoppers has received 1,655 tips from the community so far this year, which has led to 146 arrests, according to CMPD. That’s a 12 percent increase over last year. And of those arrests, 66 were fugitives.
