North Carolina's treasury is holding millions of dollars in unclaimed assets. Here's how to search for and claim your money.
CHARLOTTE, NC β From business refunds to insurance payouts, money that's rightfully yours could be sitting in government accounts, but it's up to you to claim your property. The state of North Carolina holds on to millions of dollars until it is claimed by the rightful owner or that person's heirs.
The North Carolina unclaimed property fund totals $798 million. Between July 2019 through January of this year, about $25 million of that money in unclaimed assets was returned to North Carolinians, according to the North Carolina Department of the Treasury.
The $25 million returned to residents represented βbank accounts, wages, utility deposits, insurance policy proceeds, stocks, bonds, and contents of safe deposit boxes that typically have been abandoned for one to five years,β the NC Department of State Treasurer said. βFunds become unclaimed because the company loses track of the consumer, due to an incorrect address or other missing information.β
