Driver Dies After Plunging Over Side Of 485 Crossover Bridge: Report

A Charlotte man is dead after he lost control of his vehicle on 485 early Tuesday morning, according to reports.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A Charlotte man is dead after the vehicle he was driving plunged over the side of an Interstate 485 flyover bridge, dropping to Interstate 77 below, according to reports.

The driver of the SUV was speeding and lost control when he drove over the side of a bridge as he attempted to access the Interstate 77 on ramp from Interstate 485 around 1 a.m. Sept. 19, according to law enforcement responding to the accident, WSOC reported.

The vehicle went airborne and landed below on the I-485 outer loop, ejected the driver who has been identified as Robert Kite, 48, of Charlotte, The Charlotte Observer reported. The vehicle came to a final rest on a I-77 guardrail, the newspaper said.

Kite reportedly died on the scene. No other injuries were reported and the interstate reopened after a three-hour shutdown, the Observer said.
