🌱 SC Earthquake Impacts Charlotte + Hornets' Drafts Have Local Ties

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Hello, neighbors. It's me, Alexis Goring, your host of the Charlotte Daily — here to explain all the most important things happening in town. Follow along for the latest.

First, today's weather:

Humid; a p.m. t-storm. High: 85 Low: 67.

Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. A shooting that happened in the 7300 block of Neal Road in northeast Charlotte, killed an adult male. The victim was attending a birthday party before being shot and transported to the hospital where he died. (WBTV)
  2. According to WRAL News, "a magnitude 3.4 earthquake occurred overnight in South Carolina, with some in North Carolina feeling the shaking." According to a WCNC report, "the earthquake happened at 1:30 a.m. near Interstate 20 in Kershaw County." People felt the impact in Charlotte and Georgia. (WRAL News)
  3. According to WCNC, "at Camp North End on Sunday, the Charlotte nonprofit Heal Charlotte held the annual Stop the Violence Day event. Law enforcement, families impacted by street violence, and gun prevention groups spent hours seeking solutions." This event encouraged open and sincere conversations. Tough questions were asked. They talked about poverty, community engagement, and better relationships with law enforcement. (WCNC.com)
  4. The Charlotte Hornets added two players with ties to the city of Charlotte: Isaiah Whaley, who hails from Gastonia, and Brady Manek who became a household name for the North Carolina Tar Heels last season. According Swarm and Sting, "Whaley and Manek are five-year college players, and both will be 24 years old at the beginning of next season. While this likely means that they are at or near their full potential already, it also means that the Hornets should know whether they are long-term players in a short time." (Swarm and Sting)
  5. According to The Center Square, "a group of Republican state lawmakers are sponsoring legislation to crack down on 'free' electric vehicle charging stations." So they've introduced House Bill 1049, which would "require stores that offer free electric vehicle charging stations to disclose what the service is costing customers and would ban free charging on state properties that do not also offer free gasoline and diesel." (The Center Square)
