Farmer’s Almanac: More Winter Weather Ahead For NC

Don't put away your parka just yet. The Farmers' Almanac is doubling down on earlier predictions, saying there's more winter weather coming.

North Carolina has endured its share of brutally cold temperatures and snow storms this winter. But with the recent mild temperatures and ample sunshine of late, the worst is likely behind us, right? Not so fast, say the folks at The Farmer’s Almanac, who say winter isn’t done with us quite yet.

Next week, beginning Sunday, February 4, the Queen City metro region could see more wintry wet weather, with the mountains possibly seeing a Nor’easter and more than a foot of snow, according to The Farmer’s Almanac. In early March, western North Carolina could also see a heavy snowstorm with accumulations of 12 inches or more, it said.

Last August, The Farmers' Almanac released its long-range prediction for winter 2018, forecasting those with their hearts set on snow this winter were likely to get it this year. And so far, those predictions that North Carolina would experience "above-normal" precipitation and the region will have a "wintry chill, wet & white" winter have largely panned out.

Farmer's Almanac, the iconic publication that's been serving up weather predictions since 1818, said that based on its formula many areas in the U.S. would see "above-normal" precipitation, such as in the Great Lakes and Northeast where snowier than normal conditions were likely. The Farmers' Almanac also is "red-flagging the 2018 dates of January 20-23, February 4-7 & 16-19, and March 1-3 & 20-23 along the Atlantic Seaboard for some heavy precipitation."

"Break out the space heaters, umbrellas, and warm socks, because the Southeast will see below normal winter temperatures with an unseasonable chill reaching as far south as the Gulf Coast, with above-average precipitation," the Almanac's forecast said.
