Here are the top seven stories today in Charlotte:

  1. The Charlotte Hornets Foundation has donated $50,000 in Wellness Grants to the YMCA of Greater Charlotte. This donation will help launch a new adaptive Basketball, Cheer & Dance League. According to WCCB Charlotte, "the donation was presented by Charlotte Hornets Foundation Executive Director Betsy Mack and Hornets Chief Revenue Officer Jacob Gallagher to YMCA of Greater Charlotte Senior Vice President and Chief Development Officer Dean Jones and Keith Family YMCA Executive Director Joyce Tompkins at a community event on Saturday." (WCCB Charlotte)
  2. According to WCCB Charlotte, "CMS is returning to its previous online meal application process for families seeking free or reduced-price lunch following the end of federal waivers instituted during the pandemic." Guardians of CMS students must submit a meal application with School Nutrition Services in order to learn if their child qualifies. For students who attend a non-CEP school, their parents must submit an application. (WCCB Charlotte)
  3. WBTV is now the first station in the U.S. to, in their words, to "access a revolutionary new Radar as a Service offering from climate tech leader, Climavision, filling a critical weather radar coverage gap in the Charlotte region. The station will have exclusive access to the most advanced, high-resolution, dual-polarization X-band radar in the Charlotte media market. WBTV's new radar sits within 20 miles of Uptown and has a resolution up to ten times higher than the NEXRAD radars used by the National Weather Service." (WBTV)
  4. A local restaurant is suffering because of a stormwater drainage project near Uptown Charlotte where crews are trying to improve stormwater pipes that run under McDowell and Morehead streets. According to Spectrum News, "Matt Wohlfarth, owner of Dilworth Neighborhood Grille, is among many restaurant owners in Charlotte trying to adapt while dealing with supply chain, hiring and inflation hurdles. Despite it being a constant headache, Wohlfarth admits the project is needed to help avoid flooding problems like he's experienced in the past." (Spectrum News)
  5. A few Atrium doctors have decided to end their retirement and return to work. Dr. James Hall retired from his decades-long career as a gynecologic oncologist at age 69. Though he enjoyed being retired, he felt a void because he missed working in the hospital and connecting with the people there. According to Spectrum News, "after a year of retirement, at the age of 70, Hall decided it was time to go back part-time. He usually works one day a week at Levine Cancer Institute's survivorship program. This program was the brainchild of Dr. Derek Raghavan, president of Levine Cancer Institute. Both doctors say patients' cancer journey doesn't end after they beat the illness." (Spectrum News)
  6. The Charlotte Fire Department is helping prepare students for the upcoming school year by collecting school supplies for students in need for WSOC-TV's 9 School Tools program. According to the city government, "over the past several years, Charlotte Fire stations have turned into donation drop-off spots for community initiatives. ... Having over 40 Charlotte Fire donation locations gives the school tools program four times the number of collection points in Mecklenburg County." (charlottenc.gov)
  7. Students in Charlotte will soon have to say goodbye to summer vacation and hello to a new school year! According to Spectrum News, "districts in the Charlotte area are starting the 2022-2023 academic year in August. ... Parents and teachers are also working on getting the school supply list together as inflation remains elevated. ... Classroom Central, a nonprofit in Charlotte that donates free school supplies to teachers and students, says it has seen the impacts of inflation on supplies." (Spectrum News)
