Fleeing Driver Smashes Utility Pole, Snarls Traffic In Matthews

A driver suspected of traveling more than 100 mph smashed into a car, kept going before hitting a utility pole Monday morning.

CHARLOTTE, NC -- A driver fleeing an accident allegedly reached speeds of more than 100 miles per hour before striking a utility pole near a Matthews middle school, taking down power lines and snarling early morning commuting traffic, according to multiple reports.

The predawn incident occurred on Sam Newell Road in Matthews near Crestdale Middle School. While traffic is expected to be closed until at least 10 a.m. on Sam Newell Road while power lines are restored, authorities say school traffic will not be affected, WSOC reported.

The incident was witnessed by an off-duty Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer on his way home, who followed the suspect, WSOC said. According to the station, police believe the suspect was speeding because there were warrants out for his arrest.
