🌱 Free Dental Care For NC Vets + First Female Doctor Honored
The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.
Hey, neighbors. It's Friday in Charlotte and I'm back in your inbox with everything that's fit to print about what's happening in town. Here goes.
First, today's weather:
Sun mixing with clouds; nice. High: 83 Low: 65.
Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:
- Aspen Dental is offering free dental care for military veterans Saturday. Appointments are required and can be booked by calling 1-844-277-3646. The goal is to thank veterans for their service while removing the barriers because the rules are that U.S. veterans are ineligible for dental benefits through the Veterans Administration unless they're 100% disabled, have a service-related mouth injury or were a prisoner of war. - Charlotte residents can now enjoy Metro Diner on the go by ordering online or through third-party delivery apps like DoorDash. Metro Diner To-Go serves breakfast and lunch options featuring the bold flavors that the diner is famous for such as the Fried Chicken & Waffle served complete with half a fried chicken and a Belgian waffle topped with powdered sugar and strawberry butter. - Technology helped Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department find a thief! According to WRAL News, investigators used Apple Airtag tracking technology to find Javiere Green, a thief, who stole a backpack that had an Apple Airtag attached to it. (WRAL News)
- A statue honoring Dr. Annie Alexander was unveiled Saturday along Little Sugar Creek Greenway. Dr. Alexander was the first licensed female physician to practice in North Carolina. Now she has her place on the Trail of History, which according to WCCB Charlotte, is "a collection of funded sculptures dedicated in memorial to those who shaped and defined the rich history of Charlotte-Mecklenburg". (WCCB Charlotte)
- Despite the fact that the North Carolina Senate passed a Medicaid expansion bill, its future in the House uncertain. The intention of this bill is to expand Medicaid in North Carolina. According to WCNC, "shortly before its initial passage on Wednesday, GOP Senate leader Phil Berger called on his Republican and Democratic colleagues to urge House members to back the bill." Are you a Charlotte resident looking for an investment alternative to the stock market?
Bloomberg recently asked experts where they'd invest $100,000 right now, and many of them had the same answer: fine art.
Thinking you can't afford a Picasso? Well in 2012, Congress passed the JOBS Act, which allowed for the securitization of artwork. A company called Masterworks.io built the largest platform for buying and selling art securities. In the past, you could only buy shares of companies like Apple, but with this investing app, you can unlock this powerful investment.
Meaning, you can invest in shares of million-dollar artwork. And in uncertain times, it turns out, fine art may be a wise investment. Here's why:
- Low correlation to stocks according to Citi
- Contemporary art historically returns 23.2% when inflation is >3%
- Contemporary art prices outpaced the S&P 500 by 164% (1995-2021)
