🌱 Gallery Celebrates Caribbean Heritage + Hospital Makes 'Best' List

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Good morning, Charlotte. I'm here with your Wednesday edition of the Charlotte Daily, filled with everything you need to know about what's happening in town.

First, today's weather:

Very hot; a p.m. t-storm. High: 96 Low: 76.

Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. Aaron Webb, a 21-year veteran with the Charlotte Fire Department, always wanted to be a firefighter. When he turned 19, he joined the local fire department. While the devastation he encounters when active on his job can be overwhelming, it is those times when Webb knows he chose the right career. Despite his busy day job, Webb is also part of NASCAR's on-track incident response safety team at Charlotte Motor Speedway where he and his team provide immediate response, assessment and care during on-track incidents. 2. Recently, the city of Charlotte voted to put $275 million worth of public incentives toward Spectrum Center renovations and building a new practice facility in order to extend its lease with the NBA's Hornets. According to The Center Square, this plan approved on Monday "includes $215 million in Spectrum Center upgrades and $60 million for a Hornets practice facility across the street. The $215 million in upgrades will be funded through the city's tourism tax fund while the practice facility will be funded with a new naming rights deal for the arena." (The Center Square)
  3. Eastridge Mall in Gastonia was evacuated on Tuesday after a fire broke out and people saw smoke coming from the mall. Firefighters responded. The fire started in a storage room behind a coffee shop on the first floor. Thanks to one sprinkler, the fire was kept in check. Due to the fact that smoke entered the main area of the mall, an evacuation occurred for about an hour just to be on the safe side. (WCCB Charlotte)
  4. June is Caribbean Heritage Month and to celebrate this, the Nine Eighteen Nine Studio Gallery in Charlotte will open the exhibition "THE MAS BETWEEN US" on June 25. The exhibit will feature the works of photographer Joanne Rogers and her husband painter Arthur Rogers. On display will be a colorful and visually exciting collection of photographs and paintings about the Caribbean celebration of culture, folklore, and tradition. (WCCB Charlotte)
  5. Atrium Health's Levine Children's Hospital has been recognized as one of U.S. News & World Report's "Best Children's Hospitals" this year, ranking among the top 50 in the country in eight pediatric specialties. It still is the only children's hospital in Charlotte to be given this prominent distinction. According to PR Newswire, Callie Dobbins, senior vice president of Levine Children's, said, "Being nationally recognized as a top children's hospital is an honor that continues to humble and strengthen us over time."
