🌱 Gas Prices Break Record High + Dogs Raise Money To Defeat Cancer

The quickest way to get caught up on the most important things happening today in Charlotte.

Up and at 'em, Charlotte! It's Saturday, so let's get you started with everything you need to know going on today in Charlotte.

First, today's weather:

A shower and thunderstorm. High: 90 Low: 70.

Here are the top five stories today in Charlotte:

  1. The Strategic Mobility Plan (SMP) intends to shape a new mobility future for the city by leveraging transportation to implement the Charlotte Future 2040 Comprehensive Plan. The SMP will integrate existing transportation plans and policies into one single plan, establishing new goals for mobility, modernizing current transportation policies and helping to align the 2040 Policy Map and the Unified Development Ordinance to better shape the city's future. Liz Babson, director of the City of Charlotte's Department of Transportation, said that the Strategic Mobility Plan is a "critical step in implementing the vision of Charlotte's 2040 Plan to offer everyone in our city safe and equitable mobility choices." (charlottenc.gov)
  2. For historic neighborhoods like Howie Acres, utilizing funds from the Neighborhood Matching Grants (NMG) program offered by the City of Charlotte means a great deal. It is a resource available to help preserve neighborhood history and integrity. Roma Johnson grew up in the Howie Acres community. Having fond memories of the neighborhood being close knit, where people embrace one another, is something that she hopes will remain for years to come. (charlottenc.gov)
  3. The national average price of regular gasoline reached $4.48 per gallon on Monday. Almost every state now has average gas prices above $4 per gallon. In addition to high crude oil prices hovering at $114 per barrel, the U.S. is also paying more for summer-grade fuel that can cost an extra 15 cents per gallon on average. (Fox 46 Charlotte)
  4. A Mecklenburg County Detention officer who was arrested and charged with assault Wednesday was released after a magistrate found no probable cause for the charges. CMPD officers responded to an incident on May 18 and arrested the officer. He was charged with assault on a female, communicating threats and misdemeanor assault with a deadly weapon. (Fox 46 Charlotte)
  5. One nonprofit is enticing people with adorable dogs to help raise money to defeat lung cancer. The Fido's Force Top Dog Competition aims to raise money for the American Lung Association. More than 20 dogs are competing. Linda Viner is entering her Maltese, Oliver, in the American Lung Association's Fido's Force Top Dog Competition. The way it works: the public votes on their favorite dog, and the one with the most points, or money raised, wins. Votes cost $5 each or five votes for $20. (Spectrum News)
